THE ASIAN WOMENS RESOURCE ASSOCIATION AWRA
is situated in Halifax, UK and is a communitybased, volunbtary organisation employing two full-time and eleven voluntary workers.

It was started in 1987 as Asian Womens Clothing Training Scheme funded by the European Social Fund. It provided paid training placements for up to 25 Asian womern at any given time. The staff was six full-time including two creche workers.

In the period 1990-95 the funding was taken over by Calderdale Council and re-established in the name it has today- offering leisure, social and some educational activities.

1995-present the funding from the council stopped. The funding is now given by Social Services for a Daycare Project for Asian older women and through fundraising. Calderdale College are also working in partnership with AWRA giving a range of accredited courses.

CENTRE FOR RACE CULTURE AND EDUCATION
is a partnership between Leeds Education Authority and Leeds Metropolitan University. The Centre is a teaching and research organisation, based at the university, but operating regionally (West Yorkshire).

Its main focus is

MECAS (Multicultural Education Concultancy and Advisory Services), Leeds Education Department
is an advisory and support service for primary and secondary schools.

It offers

MECAS is involved in a Lingua funded project called SALVE. This is a multilingual and multicultural awareness project which uses multimedia in primary schools in five European countries ( Finland, Sweden, Greece, Italy and United Kingdom). MECAS employs 115 full time staff.

 

Norway

KARMØY VOKSENOPPLÆRINGSSENTER
is an Adult Education Centre which provides

The Centre also offers different job training courses to immigrants in co-opration with the local employment office and collaborates with local industry in order to integrate immigrants into the job market.

The Centre also works closely with the social services and the Immigrant Office in the municipality. 15 teachers work at the Centre and around 100 adult students, of which 40 are immigrants. The average pupils in a class is 12.

NORHEIM PRIMARY SCHOOL
is a school is situated in a rural area and is the school nearest to the neighbouring town. 293 pupils in 14 classes 6-12 years old.

KARMØY SKOLE-OG KULTURKONTOR
is the Educational Department of Karmøy which through its' advisor on the teaching of a second language is responsible for integrating immigrant children in preschool/ kinder-garten/23 primary schools/ 6 secondary schools. Also responsible for advising mother-language teachers and in-service courses for teachers involved with immigrant children and adults.

 

Italy

TANTE TINTE CENTRE

ISTITUTO TECNICO PORITI AZIENDALI "EINANDI"
is a secondary school - higher level, a city school with a specific project about cultural education struggle against xenophobia. 67 teachers work here,there are 616 pupils and 23 classes of which there are 4 classes with migrants mainly from ex-Yugoslavia, Brazil and Ghana. Languages taught are English, French, Spanish.

SCUOLA MEDIA STATALE "Q.RE.S.LUCIA"
is a secondary school- 1st level situated in a suburban area of Verona - working on a specific project of linguistic support to migrant children. 28 Teachers, 239 pupils, 22 classes of which 3 classes are migrants from Senegal and ex-Yugoslavia. English and French taught.

SCUOLA MEDIA STATALE DI NEGRARI
is a secondary school- 1st level situated in a part of the province with a particular density of migrant workers. 40 teachers, 317 pupils, 21 classes, of which 6classes are migrants. Morocco and ex-Yugoslavia, English and French taught.

DIREZIONE DIDATTICA VII CIRCOLO "CARDOCCI"
is a city, primary school with a long experience on linguistic education for adult migrant workers as well as for children. 115 teachers, 800 pupils, about 90 migrrants from China, Brasil, Somalia, the Philippines and Ghana. English and French taught.

PROVVEDITARO AGLI STUDI DI VERONA ( Provincial Educational Office of Verona)
is a reference point for every school, from nursery schools to high schools and older students. The office gives counselling, documentation and training. The office administrates the project which involves the abovementioned schools, a project called "Tante Tinte".
