SECOND EUROPEAN CONFERENCE: EQUALITY IN EDUCATION

Towards the Next Millennium - Collaborating to Combat Racism and Xenophobia Across Europe
Verona, Italy 17-19 May 1999

CONFERENCE INFORMATION AND CALL FOR PAPERS

Conference supported by
The Provincial Educational Office of Verona

Organised by the Tante Tinte Centre, Verona, Italy and the House of Europe of Cerea

CONFERENCE THEME:
During the 20th century, education has become available to more people than ever before in human history. At the same time, the past 99 years have seen unprecedented global bloodbaths sparked by racism and xenophobia, with minority communities in Europe suffering from racism and xenophobia on a daily basis. So why, in this age of mass education, have we been unable to achieve a society free of the fears, hatred and prejudices that have for centuries fuelled and fed racist violence?

The conference organisers believe that education can guide tomorrow’s citizens towards new ways of living and relating to each other in the multiracial Europe of the 21st century. We are committed to the creation of an education system with a strong global perspective and a commitment to equality - moving beyond narrow allegiances based on skin colour, religion or culture.

The conference hopes to influence those developing education policy and to encourage the debate around European legislation on race and racism. It will highlight the effects of racism on ordinary people, as well as the need to increase the number of teachers recruited from the ethnic minorities. The conference will explore the role that education can play in achieving long-term benefits for minority communities.

This is a great opportunity to focus the debate about racism, education and multiracial Europe. We hope that you will join us to share your ideas so that new partnerships and developments can be forged.

This is the second European Conference, following an event held at Leeds Metropolitan University, UK in December 1997.
